A Typical Day in the Mall Parking Lot
I see it quite frequently and I know you do, too. Park near a shopping mall entrance and watch as people exit and make their way to their cars. Out comes the cell phone to call whomever for whatever. Or maybe they're looking through their purse for the car keys that should have been in their hands before they walked outside. Or they're looking through their shopping bag to see what they bought or didn't buy, or what fell out during their walk around the mall. They never stop at the mall entrance to survey the parking lot for any possible threats.
Men are just as guilty as women, but it's easier to snatch a purse than it is to demand, and receive, a wallet. Snatching a purse can be done "on the run". It requires no orders to turn it over or any waiting for compliance. And purses usually contain more goodies than wallets ever thought of.
Hopefully the purse contains just the bare minimums necessary for the shopping trip. Hopefully the cash, credit cards, checkbook and driver license are in a pants or jacket pocket and all the purse snatcher can hope for is the Mary Kay cosmetics and a low-carb candy bar.
The sad reality is that the purse snatcher will probably get cash, multiple credit cards, a driver license and other identification with the victim's address, utility and other unpaid bills with account numbers and addresses, and family photos so the thief can remember the victim for years to come. Hopefully the purse doesn't contain other items not meant for the world to see.
Fortunately, most shoppers make it to their car in good shape, only to open the door without first looking inside to see who might be waiting. They think that if they need a key to get in, so does the criminal.
