Amateur Radio is Better Than CB Radio! Oh, Really?
The year was 1983. The place was right here in good old Wichita Falls, Texas. I was an apartment-dweller at the time and I happened to have a friend over one day. The friend observed my modest Amateur Radio station atop my desk and began to inquire about it. I gave him my best "Amateur Radio is only very remotely related to CB, but is much more civilized, more interesting, more challenging, and something you should think about trying" speech. I told him how you don't hear the type of language on Amateur Radio that you hear on CB radio, etc.
Not two minutes later, a stream of F-Bombs emerged from my 2-Meter rig, and was coming from what, at the time, was the area's most-used repeater. Maybe a "B-52 Load" of F-Bombs would be more accurate because this guy showed no signs of letting up.
My friend looked at me in such a way that words were not necessary. To say that I was embarrassed was an understatement. I explained to my friend that a local radio operator's 2-meter rig had been stolen from his vehicle just days earlier (really true) and I was sure that this was the thief himself we were hearing.
My friend seemed to believe me but to this day I have yet to see him in the FCC license database!
